REAL INSTRUMENTS OR NOT?:
No there's so many possibilities today as a musician, should you use all acoustic instruments. Or acoustic drums and electric direct and base and guitar. It's a hard choice for purist certainly. Real pedals, or plugins. Analog, or digital. Big question for guitarist and basis today. Even for vocalist, how much reverb how, much delay? Double the vocals, harmonize, what to do, how real should you sound? Is it cheating if you layer your voice to sound... well good if you're a bad singer? I mean where's the line, and when do you cross it? Well, I can give you at least my opinion on the subject. My approach, and talk about an app I've mentioned before. One I like very much which is Bandlab! There is nothing you can't do on a smartphone today, and that includes producing a whole rock song using completely acoustic drums, mic'd guitar/bass cabinets, and vocals. So let's get into it...
So I play Rock music, so this will be focused on Rick Music Production. I do all my own mixing and mastering. As well as, of course playing all instruments and vocals. I had the Bandlab app on my phone for a while. And a small stock pile of songs I wrote years ago. Always wanted to bring them to light. I thought hey I got that app. So I started. I first had to get a decent interface, or preamp of some kind for mic, and guitar. I usually go DI (Direct In) into my smartphone. I use a Saramonic Smartrig II. Which is a great device. You can check out my article on it too. Anyway, once I had that, and a simple mic. Which I use a Behringer SL75. It's a Sgure SM57 clone. So with a $30 mic, and $25 interface. I was ready to make complete songs on my smartphone.
I started by laying a bass line. Then using a the mic. I recorded drums. Guitar was next. I made sure they were in time. Then sang. Now one could certainly stop there. Call it a demo, or live version. My first cut I did that. But I wanted to go deeper. I started tinkering with all the effects in Bandlab. I qiickly realized that I could make a very well produced track with the app. And anytime I got stuck. "YouTube Academy" was right there with many videos from the app itself even to learn from.
I have made over 10 songs now. I continue to educate myself in mixing, and mastering. I get better production quality everytime I finish a song. It's getting hard to believe I am doing it all on a smartphone. Bandlab even had Jam Tracks. I just recently did a track using one. And you can use other artists projects to inspire and create as well. The community is now 50Million plus!!! You can let other people use your projects in there tracks, as well. It's really the best way to go for the dirt cheap musician who just needs to express. But is the appitomy of starving artist!!!
Now, as a little bonus I want to quickly mention another app. I use it occasionally to further refine the masterin of a track. It's called AUDIOLAB. It's not free like Bandlab for all it's bells and whistles. But most of it's features are free. It's worth checking out especially if you have a pesky particular in a track to fix. It has it's features seperated by type. It's easy to use too.
So all in all you definitely can make a track, album, EP, LP, whatever you want And be proud of it. And have it pass for a decent production. So give it a try...
But wait!!! You got to hear what can be done first. Take a moment and check out some of my stuff. It's much appreciated!!! I love you all, till next time. Links below...
